Prima Bakeries ‘all’ Cornish pasty

Three Cornish family businesses have joined forces in a keep-it-local boost for the county’s “national dish” that will create new jobs.
A big expansion programme for Scorrier-based Prima Bakeries is majoring on a re-launch of its Cornish pasty range – using a long-established secret family recipe but now involving potatoes, turnip and beef from two suppliers based near Penryn.

As a bonus, Prima has also tied up a deal for another Cornish delicacy with close neighbour Rodda’s Cornish Clotted Cream.

After months of research, trials and development, Prima has chosen Treluswell Mount Farm at St Gluvias as its sole supplier of potatoes and turnip.  A few miles down the road, long-established Roskrow butcher R J Trevarthen will exclusively supply best rump skirt beef.

As well as upping its pasty marketing campaign – with out-of-county sales planned early next year via a new website – Prima has totally revamped its own retail shop at its Scorrier headquarters.

And as Rodda’s no longer have a retail outlet on their own site, that company’s fresh milk and cream will now be sold in the Prima shop alongside the new range of “home-grown” pasties.

Prima now employs 17 staff with the addition of a new full-time manager for the shop and a new accounts manager to help with the company’s expansion.  Further new jobs are anticipated next year.

“These are the first moves in a long-term development programme which will hopefully see us challenging the titans of the Cornish bakery trade,” said Prima bakery manager Ross Buist.

“At Scorrier, we have the perfect, and probably unique, combination of Cornwall’s two most famous delicacies being made within metres of each other and sold together under one roof, right in the heart of the county!”

He added:  “It’s great to be working so closely with two other  Cornish family businesses for our pasties;  local sourcing has always been important to us and to find two businesses with the same interest in showcasing the best of Cornish food is just fantastic.”

Treluswell Farm owner Olly Bromley commented:  “With the majority of our output going out-of-county to large customers like Sainsbury’s, it’s nice to think that we can keep some Cornish potatoes back for consumption in Cornwall!”

Mr Buist said the soil at Treluswell Mount Farm was perfect for high quality root vegetables, while rump skirt was “easily the juiciest and most flavoursome cut of beef that you can buy for a pasty” and Trevarthen’s guarantee that it is from cattle raised in Cornwall was “just what Prima were looking for.”
