Penzance’s local vineyard, ‘Polgoon’ has just returned from the Taste of the West Awards with more praise for their latest products. They entered five drinks, two of their 2010 wines and three ciders. All won awards with the 2010 Bacchus and Ortega white wine winning Gold, the Cornish Black, Cornish Pink and Cornish Dry Cider winning a Silver Award each and the 2010 Rondo and Pinot Noir red wine, achieving Bronze.
Vineyard Owners John & Kim Coulson have seen their business develop over the last 5 years from an amazing start, with their first ever wine, a still rosé, winning the coveted UK Vineyards Association’s ‘Waitrose Trophy’ which John and Kim were presented with at a ceremony at the House Of Lords.
“We were stunned but absolutely thrilled to be awarded the trophy and it set us on the path to create the very best products we could from our apples and grapes” said Kim.
“From a standing start we felt very proud of what we had achieved, I was new to winemaking and with a little help from some fellow winemakers, Polgoon had achieved this fantastic award. It set a benchmark of quality which we were determined to maintain with all our products” said John.
This year sees them celebrate 5 years of continued success for Polgoon and John & Kim want to hold an ‘Open Weekend’ to give people who haven’t visited a chance to drop by, have a look at the vineyards and the orchard, to see and taste their award-winning products.
“We felt that a lot of local people drive past the vineyard and maybe don’t feel they can call in, that somehow it’s just a tourist attraction. We believe we are very much a local Penzance business, making Cornish products that are now sold beyond the south-west and people are always welcome to stop by and see what we do here” said John
“We have 14 acres of Orchard and Vines with a busy Winery and a well-stocked shop. The Polgoon produce includes our wines and ‘Aval’ (Cornish for apple) ‘Peren’ (Cornish for pear) fizz as well as our small bottle ciders. Also this year, through some contacts of mine in the wine trade, I have added some wines I have personally selected from Italy, France and the New World, all great wines at really good prices”
The Open weekend will be Saturday the 15th October and Sunday 16th October from 11.00am until 5.00pm each day. Their site has ample parking and it will be a chance to see what goes into making these award-winning Cornish products right here in Penzance.
“If wine or cider isn’t for you, we also have a range of our grape and apple juices and a range of Jam, Chutney, Honey, made here at Polgoon, plus fresh eggs from our chickens and our daughter Milly also has her range of fudge on sale at the shop too! We’d love to see you so please feel free to join us on the 15th & 16th” said Kim.
